Adopting an active lifestyle

Ever heard the saying ‘no pain, no gain’? Well, don’t believe the myth. While some activity is better than none, you don’t have to
exercise to the point of collapse
to get a health benefit.1

Below are some tips to help you adopt an active lifestyle, but remember, the key is to have fun.1,2

Be realistic: Set a mixture of
short and long-term goals that are specific, measurable and achievable. Rather than a vague goal like ‘I will get fit’; try, ‘I will walk every day for 15 minutes’.

Buddy up: As well as being a great motivator, physical activity is a good opportunity to catch up with friends or family.

Mix it up: A range of activities will keep your interest up and challenge different muscles. Plan indoor and outdoor activities so bad weather and lack of daylight don’t stop you from exercising.

Soak in the community spirit: Join a club or visit your local library or community centre to find classes offered in your local area, such as Zumba, Pilates or yoga.

Take on a challenge: Sign up to a fitness event, such as a fun run
that raises money for a good cause.
You’ll not only be helping yourself, but others as well.

Reward yourself: When you reach a fitness goal, treat yourself to something you enjoy, but make
sure your rewards match your healthy lifestyle.

For the best results, combine physical activity with healthy eating. If you are pregnant, have been previously inactive, or suffer from any medical conditions, it is recommended that you seek medical advice before commencing vigorous physical activity.2
